Vented (or Unvented) Log Set

These gas fireplaces may have a mesh curtain and/or bi-fold doors (the doors must be open during operation).  It is important that the damper of the chimney is fully opened during operation of a vented log set.

Direct Vent Gas Fireplaces

Direct vent gas fireplaces have a pane of glass that is not removed during operation.  Some direct vent units may have 2 panes of glass or even 3 panes of glass.  It is important that the glass is securely in place so that the components of combustion do not enter the room.  Never use harsh chemicals (ammonia based cleaners like window cleaner) or anything abrasive.  This may cause serious damage.  Replacement glass assemblies can range from a few hundred dollars to over a thousand dollars.

Annual service recommended

No matter the type of gas fireplace, it is recommended that you have your gas fireplace serviced by a qualified technician annually.  Unvented units may require cleaning and servicing twice per year.

How to locate your gas fireplace data (make/model/serial number)

There is a data plate or data sticker located in the gas fireplace that includes information regarding the fireplace.  Don't get this confused with the data plate on your firebox.

Direct vent units have a control access area (below the logs/glass) that house the guts of the fireplace.  The data plate is usually on the floor of this area.  It is sometimes easier to take a photo of this data plate to view the information.

Vented log sets/Unvented gas fireplaces may have a metal card that is chained to the grate.  There is usually a space for this at the rear of the grate.  This card may also include lighting instructions.  Do not try to locate the card when the fireplace is operational or hot!
